It was a manufacturer defect and you should have gotten the phone for free.
Just call Verizon (1-800-2JOININ) and tell them what happened.
Verizon is very much aware of the problem that the Rival's have, but calling a recall of them all would require them to outfit every person who has a Rival with a new phone. That would mean a loss of profit for Verizon and they don't want to admit that they have a faulty phone.
